Iyad Sughayer Piano Recital

From Mozart to Khachaturian via Liszt

On the brink of a brilliant international career, award winning concert pianist Iyad Sughayer performs works from his debut album on BIS Records of solo works by Aram Khachaturian.

Speaking of his attraction to the music of Khachaturian, Iyad says:

“It seems so close to my own roots – to my people’s folk music. There is an oriental, improvisatory element that I love in Khachaturian, the rhythms and harmonies are especially attractive.”

The Jordanian-Palestinian pianist studied at Jordan’s National Music Conservatory, before continuing his piano studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

In 2018, Iyad returned to the RCNM to embark on International Artist Diploma course, studying with Murray McLachlan, Martino Tirimo and Graham Scott. His position there is funded through an FW Wright Piano Scholarship and he is the recipient of the Stanley Picker Trust Scholarship.

Recent highlights include winning the prestigious Trinity Laban Gold Medal, making his concerto debut with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and being selected as a City Music Foundation Artist 2019.

Iyad has performed across the UK, Middle East, Europe and the United States.

This concert is generously given by Iyad in support of the music charity PalMusic UK. Iyad says,

“I would never have got to where I am without the huge help and support from countless individuals in my life. The only way I can pay those people back is by doing the same for others.”

PalMusic UK (Friends of Edward Said National Conservatory of Music) works to nurture the musical talent of young Palestinians, primarily in Palestine.

Key charitable initiatives include scholarships to study at British conservatoires and a long distance learning programme that links tutors from top British conservatoires with students in Gaza through virtual (online) learning, and support for British tutors to teach at ESNCM branches in Palestine.

PalMusic UK supported the Palestine Strings to perform with Nigel Kennedy at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013. It went on to sponsor the first UK Tour of the Palestine Youth Orchestra in 2016, which performed to sell-out audiences across the UK.

Concerts are produced by PalMusic UK in partnership with local support groups and individuals.
