PSC released a statement after Palestinian prisoners suspended the hunger strike after Israeli authorities yielded to the demand to enter negotiations with the prisoners’ chosen leaders:
Join us for a solidarity vigil and protest outside of the BBC Broadcasting House for a lack of coverage of the hunger strike in the UK media.
Organised by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Palestinian Forum in Britain, Stop the War Coalition. Supported by Friends of Al-Aqsa, Muslim Association of Britain.
Over 1500 Palestinian hunger strikers are putting their lives at risk to demand an end to a number of illegal practices, including the denial of family visits, appropriate medical care for sick prisoners, and the end of solitary confinement and administrative detention – the imprisonment without charge or trial. There are currently over 6,000 Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel, of which 53 are female and 300 are children – some as young as 12 years old, 7 are elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and 536 administrative detainees are held without charge or trial. As documented by numerous human rights organisations, prisoners are systematically subjected to unacceptable and illegal practices. This includes the use of torture during interrogation, solitary confinement, numerous cases of gross medical negligence in cases of acute health issues, alongside the routine denial of visits.
This will coincide with the Solidarity Fast with the Hunger Strike taking place all day until sunset on Tuesday 30 May.
Please come and show your support as we protest the biased media coverage and stand in solidarity with those on hunger strike!
