On June 26th 2012 an independent legal report into the treatment of Palestinian child prisoners by the Israeli authorities was published. The report was funded by the UK Foreign Office and followed a trip to Palestine & Israel by a team of high-ranking UK lawyers from the fields of human rights, crime and child welfare, who travelled to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories to assess the treatment of Palestinian children under Israeli military law.
The report found Israel in breach of international law & human rights treaties. It made 40 recommendations.
You can read the report here: http://www.childreninmilitarycustody.org/report/
Since then many people have lobbied the Foreign Office to ensure Israel takes the necessary action to bring it into line with international law. In response, the Foreign Office Minister, Alistair Burt MP, has said he ‘shared our concerns’ and was ‘disturbed’ by the findings of the report. He says the Foreign Office has been working with the Israeli authorities to bring about change.
So one year on since the report was published …. has the situation improved for Palestinian children?
The panel:
Lisa Nandy MP, Shadow Minister for Children
Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC
Jude Lanchin – one of the lawyers who was part of the CIMC delegation http://www.childreninmilitarycustody.org/lawyers/
