Mahmoud Sarsak is a talented midfielder for the Palestinian national football team whose career was destroyed by three years detention without charge or trial in an Israeli jail.
His incarceration only ended in July 2012 after a three month hunger strike and an international outcry on his behalf by individuals and organisations including former French international and Manchester United star Eric Cantona, FIFA President Sepp Blatter and the international professional footballers’ federation FIFPro.
In April-June this year the sportsman and former detainee is touring Europe to highlight the experience of Palestinian prisoners and Palestinians dealing with Israel’s regime of aparthied & colonisation. .
During his UK tour he will meet footballers, fans, members of parliament, student and faith communities and members of anti-racist & human rights organisations.
Mahmoud will be in Newcastle on Friday 31st May. While Mahmoud is in Newcastle we want him to meet with prominent people in the football world so that they can hear his story directly. also those who are in a position to add their names in support of the Red Card Israeli Racism Campaign and to influence UEFA to withdraw their decision to allow Israel to host the under-21 European Championship.
